RustHQ Account

RustEdit signs in to your account on rusthq.com through your web browser. You never type a password into RustEdit. One sign-in gives you marketplace downloads, publishing, and your RustEdit Plus or Pro license on this computer.

What the sign-in gives you

  • Marketplace downloads. You can look at the RustHQ Marketplace without an account, but you must sign in to download, even free products. See Browse and download.
  • Publishing. Vendors can post updates to their products, and approved vendors can make new listings. See Publish to RustHQ.
  • Your RustEdit license. If you bought RustEdit Plus or RustEdit Pro on RustHQ, signing in puts that license on this computer and unlocks the paid features. See Free, Plus and Pro.

How to sign in

  1. Open FileRustHQ Account. The RustHQ Account dialog opens.
  2. Click Sign In With RustHQ. Your browser opens the RustHQ sign-in page. The dialog says "Finish signing in in your browser. RustEdit waits for it."
  3. In the browser, sign in to RustHQ if you are not signed in already.
  4. Allow RustEdit to use your account. The browser tab then says "RustEdit is signed in to RustHQ. You can close this tab and go back to RustEdit."
  5. Close the tab and go back to RustEdit. The dialog now says Signed in as and your RustHQ name, and shows your RustEdit license.

RustEdit waits 10 minutes for the browser. If you closed the tab by mistake, click Open The Page Again. To stop waiting, click Cancel.

Why the browser ends on a 127.0.0.1 address

At the end of the sign-in, the browser goes to an address like http://127.0.0.1:52817/callback. This is normal. 127.0.0.1 is your own computer: while you sign in, RustEdit listens there on a free port. RustHQ sends the browser back to RustEdit with a one-time code, and RustEdit swaps that code for its own key.

This is safe on purpose:

  • The code can only reach the computer whose browser allowed the sign-in. Nobody can send you a link that signs their RustEdit in to your account.
  • The code works only for the RustEdit that started the sign-in. A link from somebody else shows "This sign-in link was not started by this RustEdit."
  • Your password stays on rusthq.com. RustEdit never sees it.
note

A firewall or security program can stop RustEdit from listening on your computer. Then the dialog says "RustEdit could not wait for the browser on this computer." Allow RustEdit in that program and try again.

The account dialog

When you are signed in, FileRustHQ Account shows:

Where the sign-in is kept

RustEdit keeps the sign-in for your Windows user on this computer. You stay signed in when you close and open RustEdit. Another Windows user, or another computer, must sign in on its own.

How to sign out

  1. Open FileRustHQ Account.
  2. Click Sign Out.

RustEdit forgets the sign-in on this computer and ends it on RustHQ. It also removes your RustEdit license from this computer, so Plus and Pro features lock until you sign in again. Your downloaded marketplace products stay on your disk.

tip

To sign out a computer you cannot reach, click Manage Sign-ins on another computer, or open your account settings on rusthq.com, and end that sign-in there. That RustEdit then says "RustHQ ended this sign-in. Sign in again."
