AI Tools

RustEdit Plus

These are the tools an AI app can use through AI access. You do not call them yourself: you ask the AI in plain words, and it picks the tools. This list helps you know what the AI can and cannot do.

All tools need RustEdit Plus. Three tools also need RustEdit Pro. The AI app only sees the tools your license includes.

Positions and heights

When you give the AI a position, use world meters. X goes east, Z goes north and Y goes up. The middle of the map is at X 0, Z 0. The sea surface is at height 0, and the terrain is between -500 and 500.

Tools that look

These tools only read the map. They change nothing, so they make no undo step.

ToolWhat it does
Map InfoFacts about the open map: name, file, unsaved changes, size, resolution of each terrain layer, lowest and highest ground, how much is land, and how many prefabs, monuments, splines and groups are placed. The AI calls this first.
Map ImageA top-down picture of the map, or part of it, as the Map panel draws it, with grid lines.
Terrain Layer ImageA top-down picture of one terrain layer: height, slope, splat, biome, topology or alpha (holes), with a color key.
3D View ImageA 3D picture from a camera the AI places, as the scene view shows it. Your camera goes back afterwards.
Terrain HeightsTerrain heights on a grid over the map or a square part of it, with the lowest and highest point.
Terrain At PointsFor up to 100 points: height, slope, ground textures, biome, topology, whether it is under the sea, and whether there is a hole.
Analyze AreaNumbers for a circle, box or band along a path: heights, slopes, how much is steep or under water, textures, biomes, topology, holes, and how many prefabs, monuments and splines are inside.
Find SpotsFinds round spots that fit rules, such as a largest slope, a height range, topology to need or avoid, biomes, and distance from placed objects. Flattest spots first.
Find PrefabsSearches Rust's prefabs and your custom monuments by words, like the Content Browser.
List Placed EntitiesWhat is placed: prefabs, custom monuments, splines and groups, with ID, position, rotation and scale. Can list only what is near a point.
List MonumentsRust monuments with their name and area, and your placed custom monuments.
List PathsEvery spline: roads, rivers, rails, power lines, APC and cargo paths, and RustEdit's terrain and prefab splines, with their points.
SelectionWhat you have selected now. The AI uses it when you say "this" or "the selected".
List Procedural StepsThe steps of Rust's map generation in your current preset, and whether a run is going on. See Procedural Generation.

Tools that change the map

Each call of these tools is one undo step. Press Ctrl+Z to take back everything one call did.

ToolWhat it does
Select EntitiesSelects objects by ID, to show you what the AI means or to hand them to you. Can move the camera to them. Changes nothing on the map and makes no undo step.
Place PrefabsPlaces up to 200 prefabs or custom monuments, with position, rotation and scale. Can tilt them to the ground.
Move, Rotate, ScaleMoves, turns and scales placed objects. Pieces joined by sockets move with them. Objects you locked and the parts of a placed custom monument are not changed.
Delete EntitiesDeletes placed objects. A group or custom monument goes with everything in it. Objects you locked and the parts of a placed custom monument are not deleted.
Edit Terrain HeightRaises, lowers, sets, flattens or smooths the terrain in a circle, a box or a band along a path, with a soft edge. Flattening along a path makes a road bed.
Paint TerrainPaints a ground texture, a biome, topology, or holes in a circle, a box or a band along a path.
Scatter PrefabsScatters prefabs at random in an area, by count or density, with spacing, slope, height and topology rules, and random turn and size.
Create PathMakes a new road, river, rail or power line through points. See Path types.
Place TextWrites text with Rust's letter and number sign prefabs, as a group.
Replace PrefabsReplaces every placed copy of one prefab with another, in the same place. Parts of placed custom monuments are left alone.
Remove DuplicatesDeletes copies of the same prefab placed on top of each other. Locked ones are left alone. Can only count them first.
Rotate MapTurns the whole map by 90, 180 or 270 degrees. RustEdit shows a loading screen while it works. See Rotate map.
Run Procedural StepsRuns steps of Rust's map generation with your current preset, like the Procedural Generation panel. A full run can take minutes. The whole run is one undo step.

Tools that need RustEdit Pro

ToolWhat it does
List Cliff SetsThe cliff and rock sets the cliff brush can use. Only looks.
Paint CliffsUses the Cliff Brush: a chain of linked cliff pieces along a line, or single rocks in an area. Your own brush settings stay as they were. One undo step.
Apply Terrain GraphRuns a .terraingraph file you made in the Terrain Graph on the whole map and writes the result into the terrain, like Apply in the graph window. One undo step.

What the tools cannot do

  • Save, export or open maps.
  • Change RustEdit's settings.
  • Move or delete objects you locked, or the parts of a placed custom monument.
  • Work while you are in the middle of a brush stroke, or while RustEdit loads a map or runs a map tool.
