Name

The name panel is the top row of the Inspector. It shows for every selection, before all other panels. It holds the object's name, a lock toggle and a hide toggle.

With one object selected, the name is a text box. Type a new name and press Enter. The Hierarchy shows the new name. The name is saved in the scene file. With more than one object selected, the row says how many objects are selected (for example "3 objects selected"), and you cannot rename them.

The lock toggle locks the selected objects. A locked object cannot be picked in the scene view or moved, so the selection is cleared when you lock it. The hide toggle hides the selected objects: they are not drawn, but they stay in the scene and in saved files. When the selected objects do not all have the same state, the toggle shows a dash. These toggles change only the selected objects, not their children; the Hierarchy menu and the Edit menu lock and hide children too. Lock, hide and rename are not undo steps. See Selection and transform.
